The budget’s impact on social work…

27th June 2010

The coalition government’s first budget announced reductions in spending across many areas in an effort to reduce the current deficit.   However it seems that the social work profession could be one of the areas impacted particularly strongly by these cuts.

BASW have already voiced their concerns - chief executive Hilton Dawson has stated that in order to protect at risk children and adults from serious harm, investment in social work should be growing.  Subjecting the industry to more cuts could be hugely detrimental to the safety of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

We recognise the significant pressure and lack of resources that face many social work teams throughout the country, and support the stance BASW are taking.  It’s essential to avoid job losses and offer our frontline social workers the reosurces they need to do their job properly.

Update – July 1st:

The government has today scrapped the multi-million pound ‘Caring with Confidence’, which was put in place to provide supprt for carers.  Read more in this Community Care article.
