Facebook: Social Workers and Social Media
5th July 2010
Hello and welcome to our second post looking at social media and its benefits for social workers. Following our look at LinkedIn last week, this post covers Facebook, the social networking site which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Facebook has more than 400 million active users worldwide, making it one of the most popular and well-known social networking sites. It’s widely used in the UK, with over 20 million people using the site to build a personal profile and to keep in touch with friends and family.
As the audience has grown, the way in which Facebook is used has also developed. Aside from communicating with friends and sharing information about themselves, users can choose to join groups based on their hobbies and interests, and then get involved in discussions, organise events and connect with new people.
Facebook users are increasingly taking advantage of the site’s features to benefit them in their professional life. For social workers, this could mean joining groups and arranging events based around the profession. You could use the site to discuss issues with your peers, keep in touch with key organisations, and even look at ways to develop your career.
We’ve set up a Liquid Personnel Facebook Group, which any social work professionals can join. It’s an opportunity to meet and discuss issues with fellow social workers, and to keep up with our latest news, including new jobs that we have available. Several of our consultants are members of the group too, and you can chat to them, get career advice, and let them know if you’re looking for work.
We’re big fans of Facebook as a really accessible way to communicate and share, so if you’re online, don’t forget to become a friend of Liquid Personnel!
