Plans to scrap GSCC following “Arms Length Bodies” Review…

26th July 2010

The Department of Health’s review of “Arms Length Bodies” has today been published by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.  The major headline for social workers is the plan to scrap the General Social Care Council.

The report, entitled ‘Liberating the NHS’, explains the review of the GSCC, which is responsible for the regsitration of social workers, on pages 21 and 22.  Within, the Health Secretary said he saw “no compelling reason why the GSCC should remain as an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body in the arms-length bodies sector”.

The report goes on to explain that registration is to be handed over to the Health Professionals Council, which currently deals with Occupational Therapists and other Health staff.  This organisation will be renamed to reflect the changes in its responsibilities.

How do you feel about this news?  Do you feel that it’s right for the GSCC to be scrapped?  Please share your views below…
