Fast-track training for children’s social workers

August 24th 2009

The General Social Care Council has approved a new development route for children’s social workers which will allow them to be trained while in employment.   This job-based scheme will train social workers to Master’s Degree level while they work.

The scheme, called “Step Up to Social Work”, was developed by the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC), and will begin next month.  It is open to graduates in England who have experience working with children and families and have earned at least a 2:1 degree.   Those taking part in the scheme will be paid £15,000 a year, and almost 200 graduates have signed up to take part.

The graduates will be trained by Salford University and Manchester Metropolitan University, working with eight regional partnerships of local authorities from around the country.

This news gives social workers a greater choice for their training, with both work-based and university-based options now available.  Opening up access to learning ‘on the job’ could help develop valuable skills which new graduates may otherwise lack.
