Co-chair says College of Social Work is not yet ready to speak out…
4th November 2010
At the National Children and Adult Services Conference in Manchester this week, the interim co-chair of the College of Social Work, Professor Corinne May-Chahal, said the College was not yet ready to take on the responsibility of speaking on behalf of the profession.
She highlighted confusion in the social work profession “about who does what and who speaks up for them”, and the explained the College’s concerns that social work is not being adequately represented. Professor May-Chahal went on to explain that their work on media relationships was ongoing but not yet completed.
The concession came after Penny Thompson, chief executive of the General Social Care Council (GSCC) raised concerns that the profession is not adequately represented. Thompson commented: “The college has the opportunity to be champion of excellence and the voice of the profession”. She also added that social workers should be prepared to pay for the college in addition to paying for their GSCC registration.
