College of Social Work opens…
4th January 2012
The College of Social Work has launched following a lengthy dispute with the British Association of Social Workers (BASW). The College opened to paying members in the first week of 2012, and is looking to attract large numbers of social workers.
Social workers can pay £60 for 1 year’s membership, which offers professional indemnity or public liability cover as well as access to expert advice, college reports and a monthly online magazine. Students can join for £10, and self-employed social workers can join for £90.
The launch comes after well over a year of high-profile conflict with BASW, whose actions have included entering a memorandum of understanding to work towards a single College, lodging complaints over the involvement of Unison with the College, announcing plans to form a rival college, and forming their own trade union.
BASW Chief Executive Hilton Dawson has since committed himself to working with the College, and said he will join as a member next week.
