Number of Adoptions Falls for Second Year in Row
Government figures have shown that the number of final adoption orders have dropped by over 300 in the past year
The government previously attempted to increase the number of children adopted after 2010, and placement orders and adoptions increased rapidly 7 years ago. However, after two landmark court rulings in 2013, where it was emphasised that adoption should be seen as the last resort in the Re B and Re B-S cases, numbers have since declined.
The government has published a “myth buster” about the judgments, as since the rulings there have been many practitioner concerns over pursuing adoptions. The government has also proposed changes to adoption law in the children and social work bill which is currently going through parliament.
