What are the typical roles and responsibilities of an SEN support worker?

SEN support workers work closely with students who have special educational needs, supporting their learning and development in a way that meets their individual requirements.

This includes:

  • Providing one-on-one assistance to students, adapting teaching methods and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers and special education teachers to create inclusive and accessible learning environments
  • Attending meetings and contributing to developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students
  • Monitoring and recording social and educational progress, identifying areas where additional support or adjustments may be necessary

Above all, SEN support workers are advocates for the rights and needs of students with special educational needs, ensuring they have access to the appropriate resources and support.

Where can I work as an SEN support worker?

SEN support workers can assist students with diverse needs in various educational settings.

Most SEN support workers are employed in mainstream schools, working alongside teachers to support students with special educational needs in classroom settings. You may also work in special education units or resource bases within mainstream schools, where students with special needs receive additional support.

As an SEN support worker, you can also pursue roles in specialist SEN schools. These roles often involve supporting students who may require intensive or specialised support.

Other settings include specialist colleges, community and youth centres, residential care homes, and within homes.

What skills and qualities do you look for in an SEN support worker?

Being a strong communicator is hugely valuable as an SEN support worker. You’ll be expected to communicate openly and effectively with parents, caregivers, and other relevant stakeholders. This is critical in relaying important information about a student’s progress, challenges, and achievements to ensure they get the support they need.

Empathy is another important quality for SEN support worker jobs, as you’ll have to understand the challenges students face and demonstrate patience when providing support. As their champion, you’ll also encourage and support students in developing independence and self-advocacy skills.

Strong organisational and observational skills are good assets to possess, too, as you’ll need to assess student behaviour, record their progress and allow for timely intervention and adjustment of support strategies. Creativity will also help you develop engaging and effective learning materials and activities that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities.
