Average Social Worker Caseloads According to the Government
A report published by the government today has declared that 17,840 social workers (including agency workers) held 317,690 cases in children’s services as of 30th September 2017.

It’s not the first time that the government have estimated these statistics. However, it is the first time that they have done so at an ‘individual social worker level’.
The average number of caseloads did vary, between 10.2 and 26.4, with the government putting this down to variation in the different local practices’ case management.
The statistics have also revealed that at the end of September 2017, there were around 5,820 social worker vacancies. This is a 5% increase from that same point in 2016. Local authorities reported that the vacancy rate remained the same at 17%.
The report has said that the number of agency social workers remained the same in 2017 as in 2016.
To conclude, the total number of children and families social workers as of September 2017 was 30,670
